Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Lake Tempe in Wajo district, South Sulawesi, overflowed on Wednesday following heavy rains in the past week, inundating at least 2,485 houses in four districts.
"Thousands of houses in Wajo are inundated and 100 of them are submerged by flood water up to their roof," chief of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of South Sulawesi chapter Ichsan Yasin Limpo said.
The flood affected Wajo, Sidrap, Soppeng and Bone districts, with a water level of up to three meters in certain areas, he said.
The flood hit the hardest Wajo district whose territory covers the lake.
According to data from the PMI branch in South Sulawesi, worst hit area was Salome village, Tempe sub-district, Wajo district, where a total of 443 houses, two mosques and two school buildings were submerged by three-meter deep flood water.
The flood destroyed 98 houses moderately and 91 houses lightly.
To help flood victims, either those staying in their flooded houses and taking shelter at evacuee camps, the PMI in South Sulawesi has set up a command post to collect relief aid for the flood victims.
There was no immediate report of casualties or injuries.
