Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - The Indonesian government observed the 34th World Food Day here on Thursday, which coincides with the opening of the Flora and Fauna Week being organized until November 12, 2014.
"It is our honor to host this event in Makassar, South Sulawesi," South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo stated here on Thursday.
Among those attending the World Food Day celebrations were Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla`s spouse Mrs Mufidah Kalla and Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman.
Foreign diplomats representing 20 countries were also present at the event.
Head of the South Sulawesi agricultural, crops and horticultural office Lutfi Halide, in his capacity as the organizing committee chairman, stated that it was important to observe World Food Day as it served as a platform to increase public awareness regarding food resilience for the welfare of the global community.
The UN General Assembly has designated 2014 as the "International Year of Family Farming." This sends a strong signal that the international community recognizes the important contribution of family farmers in achieving world food security.
This year`s World Food Day themed, "Family Farming: "Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth" is being observed to promote family farming and smallholder farmers.
It focuses global attention on the significant role of family farming in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving the people`s livelihood, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, in particular, in rural areas.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations observes World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the organization was founded in 1945. World Food Day was first held on 16 October 1981.
There at least 500 million family farms across the world. This means that more than nine out of every ten farms are family farms.
They provide fresh produce and serve as the foundation for maintaining important food supply chains such as milk, poultry, pig and fish production.
"However, at the same time, many family farmers, especially subsistence producers, are part of the 70 percent of the world`s food-insecure population that lives in rural areas. As such, family farms exemplify cases of successful agriculture, but also rural poverty," FAO Director-General Jos Graziano da Silva noted in a statement during the World Food Day celebrations.
