Makassar, S.Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - A group of students from the University of Yokohama City (UYC), Japan are currently visiting Indonesia to study waste bank management in Makassar, South Sulawesi province.
"They have come here to conduct a comparative study on waste management, the waste bank system and environmental preservation in Makassar," the team facilitator, Taruhirose, said on Tuesday.
According to Taruhirose, the students` visit was aimed at understanding and witnessing waste bank management first-hand, based on the information they had obtained from the internet.
"This is the first time that the students are visiting Makassar. During their stay here, they will study environmental and waste management that can be applied to their neighborhoods later on," Taruhirose noted.
The students are also slated to visit the waste bank center in Toddopuli, Makassar, as well as the University of Hasanuddin.
"They will be in Makassar for two days. Furthermore, they will travel to Wakatobi to observe and study the environmental management system for marine ecosystems and coral reefs," Taruhirose said.
The Deputy Mayor of Makassar, Syamsu Rizal, said the students are interested in learning about the waste management method used in the city, which starts from the loading process done at homes, the collection of waste to its final disposal.
In addition, the waste management process in Makassar is interesting as it is based on an aero-energy mechanism that changes waste into energy. In addition, the waste is economically valuable for the community because they can exchange the waste for rice.
Rizal noted that currently there are 125 waste banks in Makassar, which had already legitimized a total of 165 waste banks spread across 143 villages.
"Our target is to have 333 waste banks in Makassar. The management of waste banks is part of public education aimed at making them understand that waste is also valuable," he added.
