Makassar, S Sulawesi(ANTARA News)- Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Sunday led a meeting aimed at mitigating the impact of floods and landslides that engulfed several areas in South Sulawesi province.

Present at the meeting which took place at the South Sulawesi governor`s office were Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo, South Sulawesi Governor Nurdin Abdullah, and the chief of the South Sulawesi Provincial Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

The coordination meeting was held after Kalla inspected Bili-Bili dam and Je`ne Lata bridge which was cut off due to floodwater in Manuju village, Parangloe sub-district, Gowa district.

As of Friday (Jan 25) the death toll from floods and landslides in South Sulawesi rose to 59, with 25 others still missing, according to the BNPB.

The disaster also left 47 people injured and forced 3,481 others to flee their homes, Chief of BNPB Data and Information Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press statement released on Friday.

He said the disaster also caused serious damage to 79 houses, moderate damage to two houses and light damage to 14 houses, with two of the houses being carried away by water currents and two buried by landslides.

The flood also inundated 4,857 houses and 11,876 hectares of paddy fields.

He said the disaster hit 61 sub-districts in 13 districts and one municipality. The districts included Jeneponto, Maros, Gowa, Soppeng, Wajo, Barru, Pangkep, Sidrap, Bantaeng, Takalar, Selayar, and Sinjai, while the municipality was Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.
