Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The rescue workers that a nickel mining enterprise in South Sulawesi Province deployed to the tsunami-hit district of Mentawai succeeded in evacuating the body of an old man from the rubble of his ruined house, a rescue worker said.

The body of 70-year-old Stefanus was evacuated from his ruined house in Purourogat hamlet, Pagai Selatan Island, Mentawai district, on November 3, Eric Marcus said on Thursday.

Marcus, coordinator of PT Inco Tbk's rescue team, was quoted by the company's spokesman, Iskandar Siregar, as saying that Stefanus had been found dead when being taken out of the rubble.
"The victim's body is discovered after our rescue team members have swept the hamlet areas," Siregar said.

Besides deploying rescue workers, the mining company's humanitarian mission was also supported by two doctors and four nurses.

They served the tsunami survivors who sustained injuries or got diarrhea in Asahan hamlet, Pagai Selatan Island.

"We serve 96 patients a day," said one of the voluntary doctors, dr.Syamsurizal Baharuddin.

On Thursday, the Inco rescue team members continued their search and rescue efforts to Erukparaboat hamlet in the same island.

"Locals told us that some tsunami victims still went missing," Eric Marcus was quoted as saying.

The Inco rescue team found that residents of the two hamlets in Pagai Selatan Island did need food and consumable water stocks, kitchen sets and clothes, he said.

The Mentawai people living in some islands off the Sumatra Island were shocked by a powerful earthquake and tsunami on October 25.

The magnitude of the Mentawai earthquake itself was 7.2 on the Richter Scale.

As a result of this natural disaster, 427 people were killed and 75 others went missing.

Besides these fatalities, the disaster also caused 325 people to sustain serious injuries and 173 others to get minor injuries.

In assisting the tsunami disaster survivors, the distribution of relief aid items involved choppers and ships. At least six helicopters supported the humanitarian mission.(T.SYS/R013)
