Makassar, S.Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is cooperating with the South Sulawesi provincial administration in a program to increase access to clean water and sanitation particularly for poor urban communities in six districts/cities.
The signing of cooperation agreements as well as the first launch for the program in Indonesia was conducted by the Director of USAID for Indonesia Glenn Anders with the Governor of South Sulawesi represented by the Assistant III for People's Welfare Yaksan Hamzah and the head of Takalar, Maros, Enrekang, Jeneponto districts as well as Parepare and Makassar cities here Wednesday.
The cooperation with USAID is an attempt to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015 regarding the availability of clean water in South Sulawesi, which should reach 81 percent for the urban areas, 54 percent for rural areas and sanitation which is targeted to 90 percent.
Meanwhile the head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) of South Sulawesi prvince Tan Malaka Guntur explained until 2011 only 66 percent of urban residents of South Sulawesi who savor the clean water and 34 percent for the rural while the sanitation 84 percent.
The USAID Country Director Glenn Anders said the program was a part of the United States comprehension partnership with Indonesia with the aim to expand cooperation between the two countries in the fields of environment, welfare, democracy and security.
USAID released the Health Research Association report in 2010 which said that nearly 20 percent of the nearly 8 million people in South Sulawesi still defecate indiscriminately and 40 percent of them waste the manure into the soil.
He said the six areas in South Sulawesi selected for the program for the next five years based on the results of the review that shows the availability of clean water and sanitation in these areas included into the lowest category. Besides the head of the regions were able to partner with USAID.
Glenn added, USAID poured US$34 million to fund this two programs for five years in 34 districts/cities in Indonesia covering six areas in South Sulawesi, six areas in North Sumatra, six areas in East Java, five regions in Central Java, Jakarta, West Java and Banten eight regions as well as the Ambon and Jayapura cities.
