Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Transportation Minister Evert Erenst Mangindaan is scheduled to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Trans-Sulawesi railway line next week in Barru district, South Sulawesi.

"Minister Mangindaan is enthusiastic about the realization of the Trans-Sulawesi railway project, and therefore, he is expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony," Masykur Sultan, the head of the South Sulawesi provincial transportation, communication and information office, stated here on Monday.

He noted that the minister along with numerous officials from his ministry and all governors in Sulawesi will attend the ceremony on August 12, 2014.

"The minister will be in Makassar on August 12 to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Trans-Sulawesi railway line," Masykur remarked.

According to him, the first phase of the railway construction will connect Makassar city to Parepare city in the South Sulawesi province.

Masykur pointed out that the groundbreaking ceremony will be held in Barru district, and the provincial government will coordinate with the district government to make the necessary preparations for the ceremony.

"The groundbreaking ceremony will likely take place near the Garongkong Port, since all the facilities have been prepared there," he added.

Masykur elaborated that the provincial transportation office and the Barru district government had given clearance for the land near the port to make way for the construction of the railway tracks.

"The most important thing is that we are now ready for the groundbreaking because a team of officials has been working to settle the land clearance, so that no problem is encountered after the groundbreaking ceremony," he added.

Masykur explained that the team in charge of handling the land clearance and organizing the groundbreaking ceremony had also been working to evaluate areas where the railway line will be built.

Minister Mangindaan had earlier stated that the construction of the Trans-Sulawesi railway tracks, which had so far been delayed, should be commenced at the earliest.

"I have talked about the matter with South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo, and he said the land was ready and that the groundbreaking will be held in Barru district," the transportation minister recently remarked at the Sulatan Hasanuddin Airport.

Mangindaan noted that the Trans-Sulawesi railway project is under a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme, and it should be implemented immediately.  Bessr/A Abdussalam
