Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Indonesian nutmeg has gained significantly in market especially in the European Union market in the last six months.

There is significant reduction in the rejection of nutmeg from Indonesia, head of the team of Trade Support Program (TSP) II Aditya Nugroho said here on Thursday.

"Normally in a year there were 15 to 20 rejections, but in the last six months there was no rejection of out nutmeg," Aditya Nugroho said.

He said the reason for the rejection was generally the sflatoxin content in our nutmeg.

"From 20 to 30 percent of out nutmeg contains aflatoxin. If the content is detected the nutmeg would be rejected," he said.

He said the toxic substance is from fungus as a result of improper post harvest handling.

"The fungus grows under high humidity and post harvest handling being not clean and healthy," he said.

In order to cope with such problem, TSP II has helped the farmers in handling their commodity to make sure that the nutmeg is free from aflatoxin until it is ready for exports.

"We train the farmers and exporters in post harvest handling to keep their nutmeg clean and free from aflatoxin," Aditya said.

TSP II offers the help after seeing many farmers had been frustrated with the condition they faced, he said.

"Indonesia is the 7th largest exporter of nutmeg, but there are 42,000 farmers involved in nutmeg farming. Therefore, improvement made in the export of the commodity would have significant effect," he said.

He said nutmeg production centers in Indonesia are Siau, North Sulawesi and Maluku.
