Mamuju, West Sulawesi  (ANTARA Sulbar) - West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh said he hopes cacao processing factory could be built in the province to have a maximum income from the people`s cacao plantations.

"The West Sulawesi provincial administration hopes that the government of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) would build a cacao processing factory in the province," Anwar said here on Wednesday.

He said President Jokowi would see cacao plantation in West Sulawesi during his visit to the province on Nov. 11.

He said after seeing the plantations he hopes the president would agree that the central government should have a cacao processing plant.

He said the provincial administration has for a long time planned to build a cacao processing factory but failed.

He said the cost of building a cacao processing factory would cost around Rp100 billion .

He said the regional budget appropriation is too tight that it is not possible to set aside Rp100 billion for the project.

The province produces around 140,000 tons of cacao beans per year with 185,000 hectares of plantations.

West Sulawesi is the country`s largest cocoa producing province and Indonesia is the second largest cocoa producer in the world after the Ivory Coast.

"Sulawesi contributes around 72 percent to the country`s total production of cacao beans and West Sulawesi alone accounts for 24 percent," the governor said.

Around 64 percent of the population of West Sulawesi live mainly from cacao farming.

Therefore, he hopes that the central government would seriously consider the proposal to build a cacao processing factory in the province, the governor said.  Penerjemah : O Tamindael
