Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) -- As many as 250 athletes from across Indonesia are competing in a national senior judo championship here on November 29 and 30.

Committee Chairman Lt. Col. Deni Sukwara said here on Saturday that the athletes from 33 provincial All-Indonesia Judo Association (PJSI) chapters will fight in 16 categories and two men`s (Nage No kata) and women`s (Ju No kata) events.

"The total number of attendees, including officials, referees and committee members, reach 420," he stated at the opening ceremony of the event.

Sukwara added that at the championship, the abilities of participating athletes can be measured. It also serves as a platform for them to collect points that will enable them to participate in the 29th National Games in West Java in 2016.

"The athletes can collect points at the championship, which they need to be able to compete in the 2016 National Games in West Java. This means that the tournament is not merely a place for them to win records but also one where they can collect points to participate in the National Games," he explained.

Furthermore, the secretary general of the South Sulawesi chapter of the PJSI, police commissioner Zainal Bustar, noted that the event would also be participated in by dozens of athletes from the national training center. They will not represent regions but will take part as a team representing the SEA Games Singapore 2015 national training center.

"Athletes from the national training center will take part to represent the center`s team in the championship. Their involvement will certainly help them improve their performance," Bustar added.

These athletes will compete in a number of men`s and women`s categories.

There are 16 categories in the 2014 national senior championship, including 55 kilogram, 60 kilogram, 66 kilogram, 73 kilogram, 81 kilogram and 100 kilogram ones for the men`s events and 45 kilogram, 48 kilogram, 52 kilogram, 57 kg, 63 kilogram and 78 kilogram ones for the women`s.

Bustar pointed out that the involvement of the national athletes in the championship is expected to make the competition fiercer and to serve as encouragement to other athletes to perform their best.

"We hope the championship will produce the best judo athletes, which will help to promote the country`s reputation in international events," he stated.

Moreover, the head of achievement development of the South Sulawesi chapter of the National Sports Committee (KONI), Nukhrawi Nawir, expressed hope that the event would have a positive impact on the development of judo in the region.

With regard to the achievements of judo athletes from the region, he admitted that it had dropped, especially in the 2012 National Games, which is why he hoped this tournament would motivate them to rise in the next national games in West Java. Penerjemah : Bessr/O Tamindael
