Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulbar) - West Sulawesi will have a budget of Rp1.2 trillion from the central government for the expansion of cacao plantations in three years.

"I hope other provinces are not jealous because of the support given by the central government for West Sulawesi," West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh said here on Sunday.

The province is granted the big budget as it is more potential for the expansion of cacao plantations.

He said West Sulawesi with production of 101,000 tons of cacao beans per year, is the most potential producer of cacao in the country .

All of its 192,000 hectares of cacao plantations are owned by farmers , and cacao is the main commodity of the province .

Indonesia is set to become the world`s largest cocoa producer in 2020 relegating the Ivory Coast currently the largest in the world.

The regional administration had said it was ready to boost its cocoa production to contribute to bringing the prediction to reality .

Currently Indonesia is the world`s third largest producer of cocoa beans after the Ivory Coast and Ghana in Africa.

Meanwhile, PT Cargil Indonesia a unit of the US food giant Cargill has built a cacao processing plant in Gresik, East Java, at a cost of US$100 million.

The factory will produce semi finished cacao products like powdered cacao with the brand of Gerkens, cacao liquor and butter, the company said recently.

The factory would be the largest cocoa processing facility in Southeast Asia with a processing capacity of 70,000 tons of cocoa beans a year.

The factory would export part of its production to China, Australia and Japan.

Most of the feedstock, cacao beans, would be supplied from Sulawesi.
