Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - An airplane of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia skid off the runway in Makassar`s Hasanuddin International Airport due to bad weather on Tuesday.

Chief of the Maros Police Resort Adjunct Senior Commissioner Lafri Prasetyo confirmed on Tuesday that flight GA-618, which flew the Jakarta-Makassar route, skid off the runway.

"The weather turned bad midday. We have information that an airplane skid off the runway," Prasetyo said.

Based on available information, the incident took place at 2:40 p.m. local time, when the weather condition around Makassar was unfavorable.

The police chief added that the Garuda airplane had 144 passengers onboard. They are all safe and have been evacuated to Gate 7 of the airport.

Vice President for Corporate Communications of Garuda Indonesia Pujobroto also issued an official statement on the incident, wherein a Boeing 737-800 aircraft of the airline skid off the runway.

Pujobrobto further noted that flight GA-618, which was flying the Jakarta-Makassar route, skid off the runway while landing amid heavy rain.

The plane departed from Jakarta at 11:00 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time and arrived in Makassar at 2:40 p.m. Central Indonesian Standard Time.
