Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Household electrification in three southern provinces of Sulawesi has reached a ratio of 86.3 percent, the regional office of the state power utility PLN said.

By February, 2016, electrification was around 90.34 percent in South Sulawesi province, 75.64 percent in Southeast Sulawesi province and 78.18 percent in the province of West Sulawesi, Jemmy Sumampow, head of the system planning division of the regional office of PLN, said.

The three provinces use renewable energy to generate electricity including water energy, solar energy wind energy , etc., Jemmy said here on Tuesday.

PLN itself has built a number of power plants using renewable energy in the region, he added.

In addition, PLN has asked independent power producers (IPP) to build power plants, he said, adding the output from the power plants of the private sector would be bought by PLN.

He cited PLN already bought power from IPP using renewable energy such as PLTA Poso with a capacity of 3x60 megawatts, PLTA Tangkamanipi 10 MW, PLTM Simbuang 3MW, PLTA Siteba 7.5 MW.

Currently many IPPs wanted to build solar power plants (PLTS), hydro power plants (PLTA and wind power plants (PLTB) in the three provinces, he said.

A power plant contractor PT Mega Karya Spartindo said the problem in planning to build power plants in the region is difficulty in land clearing and in securing license form the regional administrations.

Riski Feriansyah, a commissioner of the company, said the difficulties discouraged investors from doing business in the sector in the three provinces.

"Even a subsidiary of PLN has canceled plan to build a gas and coal fired power plant in regency over failure to secure a location license from the district administration," he said without giving names.

As partner of PLN and the government in the implementation of the electrification program, IIPs should be provided with facility to secure licenses, he added. ***1***

Meanwhile, manager of the Gorontalo branch of PLN Putu Eka Astawa household electrification in that province reached only 75-76 percent in ratio.

PLN and the regional administration have to work together to build power plants using local sources of energy in areas not yet covered by the PLN network, Putu said.

"Our duty is to expand our networks , but the regional administration has to build power plants without waiting expansion by PLN," he said in Gorontalo on Tuesday.

He said the regional or district administrations could build power plant using solar energy .

In Gorontalo PLN has 215,251 subscribers with households making up 83.88 percent or 202,086 units.

In a bid to increase power supply to the region, the central government has hired Marine Vessel Power Plant (MVPP) "Karadeniz Powership Zeynep Sultan" from Turkey with a capacity of 20 MW which is linked to the North Sulawesi-Gorontalo power interconnection of PLN.

MVPP, which is moored in Amurang North Sulawesi, is leased for five years by PLN.

In addition, PLN has also built a gas fired power plant (PLTG) in the sub-district of Paguat , regency of Pohuwato, operatio0nal early this year.

The PLTG supplies electricity 100 MW to North Sulawesi and Gorontalo.
