Makassar, S Sulawesi (Antara Sulsel) - Thousands of Christians flocked to a number of churches in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province to attend a Good Friday mass service to commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ two thousand years ago.

"The Good Friday service at the city`s Cathedral is scheduled for three times with attendees expected to reach up to five thousand," Adi, a church worker in charge of security, said.

He said ceremonies began in the morning, with a Way of the Cross procession attracting more than a thousand participants, followed in the afternoon with a procession to mark the death of Jesus Christ on the cross attended by more than two thousand participants.

In the evening, a Good Friday service has been scheduled to commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

The head of the Cathedral, Rev. Wilhelmus Tulak, said preparations had been carried out days before, starting with an Ash Wednesday service to mark the three holy days of White Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, ending with an Easter Day service.

"The commemoration of the three holy days is done to mark suffering, death and resurrection as a cycle of life," he said.

The local police have deployed 378 personnel to provide security during the services.
