Makassar, S Sulawesi (Antara Sulsel) - The Indonesian karateist, Wahyu Mukti Wijaya (55 kilogram men`s junior kumite), grabbed a gold medal at the Asian Karatedo Federation championship in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Wahyu won the gold medal after defeating the host country`s karateist, coach of the national team, Mursalim Badoo, said when contacted from here on Friday.

The Federation of Karate-do Indonesia (Forki) sent 11 karateists to the Asian Karatedo Federation championship, which is held from July 9 to 16 in Astana.

"Thank God, our athlete Wahyu was able to prove his excellence by becoming the best in his class," the coach stated.

Badoo further noted that Wahyu`s achievement is expected to boost the spirit of other athletes to also show their best. Moreover, the athletes have experience and achievements in various championships.

Prior to Wahyu`s victory, the Indonesian national team had secured a silver medal presented by Rezqy Dinda Amalia on the "kata cadet of the Asian women`s individual karate championship (AKF) cadet in Astana.

Mursalim also remarked that the athletes hailed from various regions in the country such as North Sumatra, Jakarta, Banten, West Java, East Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi.

The 11 karateists are David Rehendra Ahmad Firdaus (mens singles cadet), Rezqy Dinda Amaliah Ichwan (womens singles cadet), Muhammad Besnuh Billy Bilmona (+70 kilogram mens kumite cadet), Wahyu Mukti Wijaya (-55 kilogram mens junior kumite), Rafi Diaz Nugraha (76 kilogram mens junior kumite), Dwi Fadillah (womens -50 kilogram U-21 kumite), Ceyco Georgia Zefanya (-68 kilogram U-21 womens kumite), Muhammad Tegar Januar (-55 kilogram U-19 mens kumite), Febi Ramadhan (-84 kilogram U-21 mens kumite), Detrina Sabda Nugraha (mens U-21individual), and Krisfa Putri Aprillia (womens U-21 individual).
