Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale killed one resident and damaged 50 houses at Lambara village, Baras sub district, North Mamuju District, West Sulawesi, here Wednesday at around 8.52 am Central Indonesian Standard Time (WITA).

The quake's epicenter located 1.44 degree southern latitude,  119.25 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of  10 kilometers below sea level in Sulawesi waters,  about 91 km southwest of Palu (Central Sulawesi Province), information of the national meteorological, geophysics and climatology office.

A number of people were also injured in the earthquake which triggered a landslide, according to a spokesman of the North Mamuju district administration, Saidiman Marto.

Awal, who was killed in the disaster, was mining sand when the disaster occurred.

The earthquake, which was also felt by inhabitants of Palu City and Pasangkayu town (North Mamuju district), did not have potential to trigger a tsunami.

Local authorities of the North Mamuju district rushed to the disaster's location to distribute relief assistance to the victims and to get first hand information on the houses damaged seriously or slightly.

Last Monday (June 14), an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Melonguane, North Sulawesi Province, at 5.22 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).

The quake's epicenter located 3.89 degrees northern latitude, 126.77 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, around 122 km southeast of Melonguane, according to information from the national meteorological, climatology and geophysics office.

On Saturday (June 12), a 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Aceh province, triggering thousands rushing out from their homes.

Last December 26, 2004, a 8.9-magnitude quake followed by a tsunami swept and killed at least 200,000 people and many others gone missing  in Aceh. (T.SYS/F001)
