Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Indonesia still has a low number of entrepreneurs compared to other countries such as the United States, Singapore, and Malaysia, a minister said.

"We need to increase the number of our entrepreneurs which is still very low so they cannot support the country's economic growth," Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Businesses Syarif Hasan said here on Saturday.

The minister was in the West Sulawesi provincial capital of Mamuju to witness the launch of an entrepreneurship movement and attend a dialog on entrepreneurship.

During his stay, the minister in the company of Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Anindya Bakrie, Secretary of the Indonesian National Economy Afiliani and political economic observer Prof Dr Budi Santoso met with West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh at the latter's office.

The minister said the number of Indonesian entrepreneurs currently accounted for 0.24 percent of the country's population of around 238 million.

The figure was relatively low compared to the number of entrepreneurs in other countries which had high economic growth rates, he said.

He said the number of entrepreneurs in the United States currently reached 11 percent of its population, Singapore 7 percent and Malaysia 5 percent.

The government was focusing on increasing the number of entrepreneurs so that they could play a role in supporting the country's economic growth in the future, he said.(S012/H-YH)
