Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The Makassar chapter of the Association of Indonesian Youths and Students (IPPMI) has urged the nickel mining company PT Inco to build a factory in Morowali or stop operating in the area, because the company without a factory will not improve the welfare of the local population.

About 50 IPPMI activists were holding a demonstration in front of the regional office of PT Inco at Losari beach in Makassar Thursday.

The action was prompted by the fact that a factory was still not built in Morowali in compensation for the use of 32,123.01 hectares of land in Bahodopi block and 4,512.35 ha in Kolonodale block, Petasia sub-district, Morowali regency, Central Sulawesi province.

In the absence of a factory, the land became useless and did not contribute anything to the income of the area or the people.

In this context, Central Sulawesi Governor HB Paliudju had issued an ultimatum to PT Inco on February 23, 2011, to start its mining operations. The local population has also filed a demand to the Central Sulawesi District Court on January 27, 2011.

In response, head of the Inco representative office in Makassar Iskandar Siregar stated that the demand of the demonstrators will be submitted to the company's top management in Jakarta.
