Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The West Sulawesi provincial government has received an award from the central government for its success in launching energy self-reliant villages in the province.

West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh said on Sunday the province now had around 50 energy self-reliant villages, namely villages that are able to meet electrical power needs on their own.

He said West Sulawesi had energy self-reliant villages thanks to the service of Ir Linggih, a scientist who graduated from the agriculture faculty of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi province, in 1992.

"Ir Linggih has trained residents of remote villages which had no electricity such as Mamasa district on how to make micro hydro power plants using rivers as energy sources," he said.

He said Linggih made a micro hydro power plant using water from Batanguru river to meet power demand from 300 families at Batanguru village and later won a medal for his success in developing energy self-reliant villages.

"The hydro electrical power plant created by Ir Linggih is capable of supplying power to 300 families at Batangguri village. The area that has so far not received power supplies from state power utility PT PLN can now enjoy electricity," he said.

Since then, such hydro power plants had been developed in a number of remote areas in Mamasa which had never thought of enjoying electrical power.

"The number of energy self-reliant villages in West Sulawesi province will be developed. The move is designed not only to meet power demand but also to create jobs for the community," he said. (S012)
