Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Police of Selayar Islands District has been taking part in protecting thousands of sea turtles from threat from predator in Kampung Penyu, Tulang Hamlet, Selayar Island District, South Sulawesi.

Chief of Selayar Police Resort Station Adjunct Senior Commissioner Mohammad Hidayat In a release here Tuesday said that the rescue mission of the sea turtle eggs was aimed to maintain the sea turtle population as from the previous experience many of its eggs were eaten by predators.

During the program, the eggs were moved to a save place to prevent them from being preyed by predators such as snakes, rats, birds, lizards and dogs roaming at Kampung Penyu.

"We have been conducting this program since February. Up to April, we have moved and saved more than 2,393 sea turtle eggs," Hidayat said.

The conservation program is also aimed to promote concern on nature preservation to local people.

Selayar Police, helped by local people, look after the eggs in the captive for around 55 days before they hatch.

In August, during the spawning season, as many as six thousands of eggs are predicted to hatch.

"We hope Kampung Penyu can be home for world`s rare sea turtles without being threatened by predators and human poachers," Hidayat said. AES Wicaksono/Yosep
