Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - South Sulawesi recorded a 23.75 percent increase in exports to US$154.12 million in May from US$124.54 million in the previous month.

Head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Nursam Salam described as good the export and import performance of South Sulawesi.

The main export earner of South Sulawesi is nickel the export of which were valued at US$89.62 million or 58.15 percent of the total export value of the province in May.

The second largest export earner is cacao, which contributed US$26.60 million to the total export earning in May , followed by oil grains and herbal medicines the exports of which were worth US$13.39 million.

Other export commodities with significant contribution to South Sulawesi`s export earning include fish and shrimps.

"Until May this year, nickel, plantation products and fishery products are still the main export commodities from South Sulawesi, Nursam Salam said here on Tuesday.

In the first four months of the year, exports of South Sulawesi were valued at US$484.46 million , down from US$515.31 million in the same period last year.

Nursam said the 5.99 percent fall in the export value in the January-April period this year was attributable to shrinking export of nickel, which is produced mainly in Soroako, Luwu Timur.

Based on data at the BPS, nickel accounted for 57.86 percent of the province export earning in April, 2014.

The main countries of destination of exports from South Sulawesi is Japan accounting for 61.72 percent of its total exports.

South Sulawesi also recorded good performance in controlling inflation.

According to data from BPS, South Sulawesi`s inflation was only 0.3 percent in June or below the country`s average of 0.43 percent.

With inflation of 0.30% South Sulawesi performed better than many other provinces in June, Nursam Salam said earlier on Tuesday.

Nursam noted that the main contribution to inflation in South Sulawersi was foodstuff with prices up 0.24 percent, manufactured food, beverage and tobacco with prices up 0.29 percent, drinking water, gas, electricity and fuel up by 0.28 percent, clothing 0.33 percent, health sector up 1.32 percent , etc.  Fardah Assegaf
