Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Indonesia`s national karate team is targeting gold medals in the 14th Asian Karate-Do Federation (AKF) Cadet, Junior and U-21 Championships in Malaysia from August 8 to 10.

Coach Mursalim Badoo, when contacted here, on Saturday, said that the set target was based on the national team`s performance during the same event at Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Sport Complex Dubai, United Arab Emirates from November 28 to December 7, 2013.

"We are targeting better achievements than in 2013. We are hoping for support from the community so that these could be met," he said.

In the AKF 2013, Indonesia won two silver medals and one bronze medal.

The silver medals were won by Ahmad Zigi Zaresta Yuda from West Nusa Tenggara in the men`s individual event of the cadet class and Ifka Widya from South Sulawesi in the junior 48 kilogram kumite class.

Ifka failed to win a gold medal after losing to a karateka from Kazakhstan in the final.

Regarding Ifka`s chances in the AKF 2014, coach Mursalim Badoo said the match later would be tougher and so it was difficult to predict.

"We still rely on Ifka in the junior category. We keep focusing on improving the performances of the players with regard to achieving their best performance," he said.

Indonesia will send its 20 best players consisting of 11 men`s and 9 women`s players to the AKF in Malaysia.

They would conduct final preparations at a national training center before leaving for Malaysia on August 6.

The general secretary of the South Sulawesi chapter of the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI), Addien, hoped the team, especially players from South Sulawesi, could put up their best performance in the annual event and said that he was optimistic about it. Bessr/Yosep
