Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulbar) - Indonesia is the most peaceful democratic country in the world, vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla remarked, referring to the recent presidential election that went off without any conflict.

Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the West Sulawesi province here on Monday, Kalla stated, "We must be grateful that the democratic process went well in our country and that there were no conflicts and no loss of life."

The celebration was attended by a number of governors and vice governors from Sulawesi, as well as the vice governor of East Kalimantan, regional legislative members, community and religious leaders, academicians, and local officials from all districts in West Sulawesi.

Kalla clarified that there were a few disputes but these were handled and did not lead to any clashes.

The vice president-elect further said that there was no country as pluralistic as Indonesia where people lived peacefully despite differences in religion and ethnicity.

He also mentioned that countries like Thailand, Philippines and many in the Middle East witnessed clashes that claimed lives.

"The worst situation was in the Middle East where a majority of people are Muslim. They have killed each other to win power," he stated.

Kalla urged the people in Indonesia to maintain such harmony and continue to work to ensure the country`s development and their own welfare.

President-elect Joko Widodo and Kalla are scheduled to take over from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and vice president Boediono on October 20, following their victory in the election on July 9, wherein they defeated Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa.
