Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - South Sulasesi reforestation figure Tenry Onny Gappa passed away on Friday at Mouth Elizabeth hospital in Singapore, where he has been treated for a digestive problem.

"Pak Onny died at 22.24pm local time at a hospital in Singapore on Friday (Oct 10)," one of his family members, former Makassar mayor Andi Herry Iskandar, said here on Saturday.

Onny was known in Makassar and other regions in South Sulawesi as a campaigner for planting trees and he had set a target of re-greening 30 percent of Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi.

He started his campaign by planting rain trees in cooperation with the VII Wirabuana Military Region 10 years ago to support the National Movement of Protected Forest Rehabilitation Program.

Onny also mobilized his colleagues in the banking sector to join in his "Banks Plant" project launched on September 28, 2014 through the South Sulawesi Regional Banking Forum (BMPD).

"As a committee chairman, he distributed 500 mango and rambutan trees to 14 sub-districts in Makassar," BMPD South Sulawesi chairman Suhaedi said.

Although he is a banker and a board member of Bank Panin, Onny has also dedicated his life to environmental activities.

Onny`s body is expected to be flown to Makassar on Saturday afternoon.
