Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulbar) - Several university students in Mamuju, West Sulawesi, staged a rally here, Wednesday, calling for the nationalization of mines to improve the public`s welfare.

Foreign mining companies in West Sulawesi Province must be nationalized, so that the local people could enjoy the benefits of the existing natural resources, Head of the Mamuju chapter of the Indonesian Muslim Students` Movement (PMII) Ibnu Imat Totori noted here, Wednesday.

PMII and members of the Indonesian Youth Struggle Front (FPPI) voiced their protest over the visit of the US consul general and representative of the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The students were stopped by civilian security personnel when they tried to approach the cavalcade of the US diplomat. One security personnel was injured when a scuffle broke out between the students and civilian security personnel.

The students suspect that the American delegation`s offers to assist West Sulawesi in the fields of health and education are merely a pretext, while, in fact, they harbor intentions of exploiting the natural resources of West Sulawesi.

"We urge the public to be cautious of the US aid to West Sulawesi because it is just a disguise to exploit the abundant natural resources of West Sulawesi, particularly its minerals," the student pointed out.

He called on the West Sulawesi administration to cut off any cooperation ties with the United States because its only interest in the province is to exploit the natural resources.  Fardah Assegaf
