Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - The government will build three new dams in South Sulawesi, namely the Pamakulu Dam in Takalar district, the Jenelata Reservoir in Goa district and the Posi Dam in Selayar district.

"The three new dams will be smaller than the large reservoirs of Karangloe, Baliase and Paselloreng. Land clearance for these three dams is underway," Asmanto Baso Lewa, the chief of the Public Administration Bureau of the regional government of South Sulawesi, said here on Wednesday.

"The document on the development plan for the Pamukulu Dam has been submitted to the government. According to the River Area Development Agency, the budget for its construction has been made available," he affirmed.

Lewa also pointed out that the construction of the Pamukulu Dam will need 10 hectares of land. "The budget will be borne by the central government," he noted.

In addition, the head of the Pompengan-Jeneberang River Area Development Agency, Agus Setiawan, stated that there is potential to develop 13 reservoirs in South Sulawesi.

"Three of them have been in the process of construction this year, while the remaining others are still being deliberated," Setiawan remarked.

Moreover, Governor of South Sulawesi Syahrul Yasin Limpo admitted that the dams were needed to maintain the province`s rice fields, which covered one million hectares of land.

"This is important to maintain our rice production surplus," Limpo added.
