Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Taiwan is confident that the Indonesian market has potential despite the current global economic slowdown, Director of the Economic Division of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia Y. C. Tsai said.

"We see that consumer spending in Indonesia for Taiwanese products is much higher as compared to those in other countries. Domestic consumption continues to be one of the driving forces of the economy in this country, and we believe that the economic slowdown is only temporary," Tsai stated here on Friday.

In fact, Taiwan is using this economic slowdown as an opportunity to continue introducing its products to the Indonesian market, he pointed out.

"Therefore, when Indonesia`s economy recovers, our products will have greater opportunities in the country`s market," Tsai affirmed.

Moreover, trade between Taiwan and Indonesia is still in the early stage with less significant market share, he noted.

"However, the growth is significant and promising," he remarked.

Furthermore, within the framework of the ASEAN Economic Community, Indonesia is considered both a market and an investment destination for Taiwanese companies.

"Taiwanese firms can establish their base in Indonesia so production can be carried out here to bypass import tax," Tsai added.

In addition, Director of the Taiwan Trade Center in Indonesia Tony Lin believes that in the first stage, Taiwan will bring its products to Indonesia, following which it will increase investment and business cooperation.

"We will act as the liaison between Indonesia and Taiwan to establish such cooperation," he said.
