Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Chief of the National Police General Badrodin Haiti officially opened a regional coordination meeting on the implementation of simultaneous regional head elections (pilkada) 2015 here on Monday.

"For the first time in history, Indonesia will hold simultaneous pilkada this year," General Haiti stated here, Tuesday.

The police chief urged security personnel to anticipate possible conflicts or violence during the local elections.

All personnel must be ready to anticipate such incidents and focus on their respective tasks, he emphasized.

"Every party must be committed to protecting the pilkada to make it a success," he affirmed.

South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limbo lauded the police and military personnel for maintaining stability and security in the province.

The meeting was attended by hundreds of participants representing the military, police, and local government officials as well as the candidates and executors of pilkada.

Indonesia will hold its first-ever simultaneous pilkada, which will draw over 800 candidates across the country on December 9, this year.

During the pilkada 2015, the people in 269 regions will, for the first time, be able to simultaneously and directly elect local regional heads.

This year`s pilkada will be held to elect nine governors and vice governors, 224 district heads and their deputies, and 36 mayors and their deputies.

The government has planned to use an e-voting system in the second phase of the simultaneous pilkada in 2017 and during the legislative and presidential elections in 2019.
