Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - The regional taxation directorate general office for South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and West Sulawesi said it overshot its tax amnesty redemption target.

The regional tax office said it collected Rp36.1 billion in tax penalty so far in the second phase of the tax amnesty program starting Oct 1 this year.

The tax amnesty program starting July1 this year would end in March 2017 . The program is made in three phases with the first phase from July 1 until Sept 30, and the second from Oct 1 until Dec. 31 to be followed with the last phase from January, 2017 to March 31 , 2017.

Chief spokesman of the regional tax office Aris Bamba said so far in the second phase of the program there were 2,421 tax payers taking part in the program with redemption or tax penalty reaching Rp36.1 billion.

In the first phase there were 9,720 tax payers making use of the program paying Rp865.3 billion in redemption to the state, Aris said.

Altogether so far until 23 November, the number of tax payers taking part in the program in the three provinces totaled 12,141 with redemption of Rp901.4 billion, he said.

The redemption already exceeded the target set by the regional tax office at Rp750 billion until December, he said.

He said the office was optimistic the redemption would rise further that could reach Rp1 trillion by the end of the year.

The government earned a total of 97.2 trillion in tax penalty in the first phase of the program ending on Sept.30 .

The government also recorded repatriation of Rp137 trillion in funds parked abroad by rich Indonesian tax payers.

Declaration of taxable assets, previously not reported, reached Rp3,500 trillion improving the government tax data base.

The country`s tax amnesty program is billed the most successful among countries ever launching tax amnesty.
