Makassar, S.Sulawesi (Antara Sulsel) - Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi is establishing the first Center of Microfinance in Indonesia with a full support from the state-owned bank of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI).

"The Center of Microfinance is important because we need an official institution which is able to organize education and training programs that integrate micro business, micro finance institutions and governments in order to form strong and independent people`s economy," Hasanuddin University`s Rector, Prof. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, said here on Monday.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla conducted the groundbreaking of the building which will be managed by the Faculty of Economics and Business.

Vice-President in his speech hoped the Center of Microfinance can be an educational center with futuristic concept and practices.

The building is planned to be completed within six months, consists of two floors with an area of 1,400 square meters. The center will have laboratories, a mini theater, and other amenities that will integrate education, training and mentoring.

Meanwhile, BRI`s President Director, Asmawi Syam, said it is time Indonesia raises its microfinance as a science.

"So far, we do practice microfinance but our knowledge is taken by other countries," he said.

According to South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo the Center of Microfinance is a great idea for a nation and so meaningful.

"People so need the Center of Microfinance that we have to support it," the governor said.
