Makassar, S Sulawesi (Antara Sulsel) - The administration of Selayar Islands is optimistic of attracting thousands of domestic tourists to attend the Wonderful Takabonerate Festival to be held on Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi, on October 23-27, 2017.

Various traditional art and cultural performances will be organized during the festival, Ince Rahim, head of the Selayar Islands tourism office, revealed here, recently.

Benteng and Takabonerate diving spot will be the two locations where the festival will be held. Thousands of tourists are expected to attend the events in Benteng in Selayar, Rahim noted.

Among events to be held in Benteng are a canoe race, a decorated pedicab parade, a duck catching swimming race, and traditional art and cultural performances, particularly those of the Bajo sea nomad tribe.

Moreover, a culinary bazaar offering various local fish dishes will be held along with a mass dance performance featuring traditional games of the local people.

Muh Basli Ali, the district head of Selayar Islands, said the local government has made optimal preparations for the festival in order to attract as many tourists as possible.

He expressed hope that the guests would be impressed, so they would return for next year`s festival.

Stretching south of the main island of Sulawesi into the Flores Sea, the Takabonerate National Park, located in Selayar District, is a predominantly rich marine park and is also habitat to several bird species.

The Island of Selayar is a gateway to this extensive 530,765-hectare national park, of which 220 thousand hectares form an expanse of atolls and lagoons.

Takabonerate is the third-largest atoll region in the world after Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands and Suvadiva in the Maldives.

Apart from atolls, this national park comprises 21 islands and has 242 species of corals, 526 species of colorful and strange reef fish, as well as 112 species of macro algae.
