Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - Thousands of houses in the West Sulawesi provincial capital of Mamuju were flooded on Friday after seven hours of heavy rains.
The BTN AMPI housing complex occupied by a hundred families was the hardest hit by the flood where a number of houses submerged in chest-deep water.
The flood waters which came all of a sudden panicked the residents most of whom were still sound asleep, Bakri, a resident of the housing complex, said.
Panick-stricken residents were unable to control the flood waters, which had seriously damaged the furniture in their homes, he said.
"We were shocked when the flood water slowly but surely entered our homes especially that many of us were sitll asleep," he said.
Many residents found it difficult to remove their belongings to safer places, he said.
