Makassar, S Sulawesi, Oct. 16 (Antara) - South Sulawesi`s export earning in September was US$3.7 million or around 4 percent lower than in the previous month.

"In September there was a decline of around 4 percent from export earning in August," head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Sulawesi Nursam Salam said here on Monday.

Based on data from the BPS office exports in September were valued only at US$80.78 million , down from US$84.54 million in August.

Declines were recorded in the value of 8 of 10 export commodities of the province. Increase were recorded only in the exports of nickel valued at US$59.43 million. Exports of spices were relatively flat in value.

Among the main export commodities are nickel, oily grains and medicinal plants , cacao, meat , fish and shrimps.

Nursam , however, noted there are encouraging demand from a number of potential countries.

BPS said the country`s total exports also shrank 4.51 percent in September dropped to US$14.54 billion from US$15.22 billion in August.

BPS Chief Suhariyanto attributed the decline to shrinking exports of commodities other than oil and gas . Exports of commodities other than oil and gas fell 6.09 percent.

Exports of oil and gas increased but exports of other commodities dropped 6.09 percent, Suhariyanto said here on Monday.

Year-on-year, however, the country`s exports still rose 15.60 in September this year.
