Makassar (ANTARA Sulsel) - Five of Makassar city's 14 sub-districts have adopted and been implementing Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) programs for their own wellbeing, a local official said.

"The five sub-districts which have adopted Water and Environmental Sanitation programs are Tallo, Ujung Tanah, Makassar, Tamalate, and Tamalanrea," Tallo sub-district head U Gippying Lantara said here on Wednesday.

Lantara said the water and environmental sanitation programs had enabled the people of Tallo sub-district to turn household garbage into things of economic value.

"Through the programs, people in the five sub-districts will enjoy clean and healthy environments in addition to having additional income from the recycled household garbage," Lantara said.

Meanwhile, Makassar Vice Mayor Supomo Guntur said the success of the five sub-districts in implementing WES programs could be followed by other sub-districts.

Regarding household garbage management, Supomo Guntur said every family head would be provided with adequate knowledge on how to manage garbage through a process designed to "reduce, reuse recycle" the material.

Daeng Isa, a woman from Tallo sub-district, admitted that she had reaped the advantage of the water and environmental sanitation program at her village.

"Under the program, we collect used plastic water cups and craft them into artificial flowers and other ornamental items which we sell in our struggle to make ends meet," said the woman with two children.
