Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - A number of labor unions on Saturday urged the local government to immediately set up a city wage council to recommend the formulation of standard minimum wages.
As an industrialized city in the eastern part of Indonesia, Makassar had yet to set a standard minimum wage, Sibali, chief of the organizing committee of an interactive dialog held to mark International Workers' Day, said here.
The labor unions also asked the government to form a tripartite cooperation institute involving the government, employers and workers to detect manpower-related problems as early as possible.
He said one of the problems facing Indonesian workers was related to the workers' social insurance system (Jamsostek).
"The vast majority of workers are not covered by social insurance," he said.
The dialog was organized by the All-Indonesia Labor Union (SPSI), the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI), and the Confederation of Indonesian Labor Unions (KSPI).
