Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - PT China Mikro Hidro will start building two dams to operate a micro hydro power plant in West Sulawesi province this month to cope with rising power demand.

The two dams would be built in the location of the power plant at Karama village, Kalumpang subdistrict, Mamuju district, West Sulawesi, West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh said on Thursday.

PT China Mikro Hidro will be the second Chinese company to build dams in the location of the hydro power plant in the province.

"With the construction of the two dams, the Karama mikro hydro power plant will have three dams to operate the power plant to meet power need in this region," he said.

Built by the West Sulawesi provincial government in association with Chinese investors, the Karama hydro power plant with a capacity of around 1,800 megawatts would be the biggest power plant in the province, he said.

The construction of the hydro power plant would cost an estimated US$4.5 million and the money would gradually be made available in three years' time, he said.

Hopefully, the power plant would be able to meet power needs not only in Sulawesi but also in Kalimantan. (S012/H-NG/)
