Mamuju (Antara Sulbar) - Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman has urged West Sulawesi Province to support the national food strengthening program proclaimed by the central government.

"My visit to West Sulawesi this time is in the context of boosting the production of strategic commodities in the province to support the national food strengthening program," Sulaiman stated here on Thursday.

Sulaiman said it was his third visit to West Sulawesi in order to increase the production of commodities, such as rice and corn.

"We hope this year, Indonesia would no longer import corn, and it is the government`s vision with regard to the food sector. This year, the government`s program aims to procure one million hectares of land across Indonesia, including in West Sulawesi," he remarked.

According to the minister, during the fasting month of Ramadan this year, the government has distributed over two million tons of rice, 40 tons of meat, 400 thousand tons of sugar, and 138 tons of corn.

"Food stocks are available and secure to meet the food requirements of the community, especially during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan," the agriculture minister noted.
