E. Luwu, S. Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - The South Sulawesi provincial administration will extend Sorowako`s airport in East Luwu district in order to maximize its potential and serve commercial flights.

"The extension of Sorowako airport`s runway is intended to maximize the potential of the airport in serving commercial flights," South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo said here Tuesday.

The airport runway extension was marked by material dumping of ten dump trucks at the site of the airport extension.

The acceleration of development of East Luwu can be done by developing air transport, East Luwu head administration Irman Yasin Limpo said.

"One of the efforts is to attract investors to invest in the area is by providing open and fast access," he said.

Sorowako, which is currently managed by Vale Indonesia company, is very viable to serve commercial flights, but needs additional runway length, Limpo said.

"To land a commercial aircraft we need to add a path which is approximately 175 meters long," he said.

The district administration has coordinated with Wings Air which has ATR 72 aircraft with a capacity of 72 passengers.

"Wings promised to operate ATR 72 to serve flights to and from Sorowako airport," Limpo added.
