Makassar, S Sulawesi (Antara Sulsel) - The international conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) supports the progress achieved by Indonesia`s maritime sector, according to Research, Technology, and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir.
"The ASAIHL conference, attended by participants from 28 countries, extended support to develop the potential of marine resources and approximately 17,400 islands spread across Indonesia," Nasir said while opening the international conference here on Wednesday.
According to the minister, the maritime field holds immense potential and is important to be developed to connect the islands. Hence, with the support of other state institutions -- the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia Pacific -- it could forge research and education cooperation.
The minister outlined at least seven priority areas of development, including food security, agriculture, transportation, and maritime, for establishing cooperation with international organizations.
In the meantime, ASAIHL Secretary General Dr Ninnat Olanvoravuth said Indonesia, the largest ASEAN country, has tremendous marine potential.
"Together, we can develop this potential in the form of joint research and scientific studies, which will be published in international journals," Olanvoravuth remarked.
The international ASAIHL conference was held from May 16 to 19, 2017, and attended by representatives from 28 countries.
