Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The petrol bomb attack on Tempo news magazine's office building in central Jakarta last Tuesday has drawn condemnation from a local non-governmental organization.

Chairman of West Sulawesi's Anti-Corruption Legion (LAK) Muslim Talillah Azis said here Thursday the attack was an act of terror to suppress press freedom in Indonesia.

"We condemn this act of terror," he said.

This kind of terror was apparently the work of corruptors or their henchmen who disliked Tempo magazine's recent reports on the discovery of suspicious bank accounts in the name of certain police officers.

Besides condemning the petrol bomb attack on Tempo, Azis also expressed concern about Thursday's manhandling of an Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) activist by unidentified persons.

The attack on ICW investigator Tama S.Langkun, 25, who had to be hospitalized for his injuries might also be related to ICW's activities, he said.

"We condemn those behind the attacks on Tempo magazine and the ICW activist. We want them to be brought to trial," he said.

In connection with the Tempo attack, the Central Jakarta Police had until now questioned five witnesses.

"We are still investigating the motive for the Molotov cocktail bombing," Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Hamidin said.

Police found the remnants of three Molotov cocktails - one bottle still intact - at the crime scene and took the objects to Police forensic laboratory for further tests.

Some witnesses said the small bombs were lobbed at the Tempo magazine office building by two men wearing black leather jackets riding on a motorcycle.

After the act, they rode off in western direction.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Boy Rafli Amar said the terror was not related to the news stories Tempo had published on senior police officers' suspicious amounts of money in their bank accounts.

There were no casualties in the Tempo magazine attack. (R013/S012)
