Makassar (ANTARA) - The Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University (FKG Unhas), proudly hosted an International Class Guest Lecture on April 21, 2025, featuring Prof. Yung-Kang Shen, Ph.D., from Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. Themed “The Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow of Digital Dentistry,” the lecture offered cutting-edge insights into the digital revolution currently transforming the field of dentistry.
This session, held as part of the Dental Materials and Technology course, provided students and faculty with a valuable opportunity to explore the latest innovations and future directions in oral healthcare.
The rapid development of technology has propelled dentistry into a new era of digitalisation. Innovations such as CAD/CAM software, 3d printing, and intraoral scanners have significantly enhanced the accuracy, efficiency, and comfort of dental treatments.
Notably, 3d printing technologies like Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) have revolutionised dental manufacturing. SLS enables the fabrication of durable polymer-based components, while SLM is used to produce highly detailed metal frameworks for prostheses and implants. These technologies allow for the creation of complex geometries and high-density structures, elevating the quality and customisation of dental restorations.

Incorporating these advancements into clinical practice has resulted in faster workflows, more precise treatment outcomes, and improved patient experiences. Beyond improved prosthetic fabrication, digital tools are now central to diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient communication.
Looking to the future, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to play a transformative role in digital dentistry. From real-time diagnostics and predictive analytics to the automated design of restorations, AI will empower dental professionals with tools to provide highly accurate, personalised care. Machine learning algorithms will analyse vast datasets to support evidence-based decision-making and streamline clinical procedures.
As the field continues to evolve, dentistry is poised to become increasingly predictive, personalized, and minimally invasive. These technological innovations are not only redefining traditional dental practices but also setting new standards for excellence in patient-centered care.
The integration of digital solutions reflects Hasanuddin University’s commitment to embracing global advancements and preparing its students to lead in the future of healthcare.
