Makassar, South Sulawesi (Antara News) - A fire razed at least 23 homes at Teuku Umar street in Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province, on Saturday, leaving 176 people displaced.

The fire which broke out at 11.30 a.m. lasted for 90 minutes.

"When I was taking a rest, I heard somebody in the house next to mine shouting fire. I rushed outdoors and found fire burning the roof of my house. The fire first came out from the house next to mine," head of neighborhood association Abdul Samad said.

He said all contents of his house were burned down. "I only could rescue my children."

A number of witnesses said the fire was caused by an exploding gas cylinder at the house of the Muhammad Tahir family and later spread to nearby buildings.

The material losses caused by the blaze are estimated to reach Rp2 billion.

No fatalities were reported in the fire.

Hundreds of fire trucks were sent to the scene and the blaze could be put out 30 minutes later.

Also on Saturday, a fire gutted a mosque in the AMKOP school of economics on Jl Meranti, Makassar.
