Makassar Students Demand Boediono's, Sri Mulyani's Suspension
Makassar (ANTARA Sulsel) - Three student demonstrations took place here on Tuesday, all demanding the suspension of Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani over the Bank Century case.
The student crowds organized by different organizations came to the South Sulawesi Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) in three waves to present their demand to the local legislature.
A spokesman of hundreds of students grouped in the Moslem Student Action Front (KANNI) said Boediono and Sri Mulyani should be suspended from their posts as they were the ones responsible for the loss of Rp6.7 trillion in funds to bail out ailing Bank Century.
It was Boediono who as governor of Bank Indonesia at the time was the main advocate of the disbursement of Rp6.7 trillion in funds to prevent the bank from collapsing although the amount approved by the parliament was only Rp1.3 trillion as stipulated in a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu), the KAMMI spokesman said.
Students led by the Indonesian Muslim Student Association (HMI) coordinating body (Badko HMI) urged the speedy formation of a House committee to investigate the scandal in the troubled bank which was not long ago renamed Bank Mutiara. They said the House committee must consist of legislators who had the needed capability and were of high personal integrity and not involved in the Bank Century case. The committee must be led by legislators who initiated the proposal for a House inquiry, they said.
Another group of students coordinated by the HMI branch at the law faculty of UMI university called for the dismissal of Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Muliani to speed up the thorough investigation of the Bank Century scandal.
All three demonstrator groups were met by DPRD members who promised to take follow up actions on the students' aspirations through the existing mechanism.
Akmal Rasluddin, the assembly's vice chairman, who received the KAMMI demonstrators, said he personally shared the students' sentiments and promised to convey their aspirations to the assembly's leadership.
Assembly members Nasrullah Arsyad and Mu Awwal Muin told the demonstrators led by the HMI at UMI University they would send a facsimile on their demand to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta.
