W Sulawesi Among Ri's Most Malaria-Prone Provinces

Mamuju, W.Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - West Sulawesi is one of the most malaria-prone provinces of Indonesia where eradication breakthroughs are badly needed, a senior health official said.

In 2009 alone , a total of 1,367 people were known to be suffering from malaria in West Sulawesi, Lukman Hakim, director general of diseases control and environmental health at the Health Ministry, said here Friday.

Of West Sulawesi's five districts, Mamuju had 563 malaria sufferers, the highest number, in 2009. In Polman district there were 124 malaria sufferers, in Majene district 705 , in Mamuju Utara district five and in Mamasa district none.

Lukman said malaria was endemic in a total of 424 districts in Indonesia, meaning that about 45 percent of Indonesia's population was at risk of contracting malaria.

Malaria is one of diseases that contribute to the high mortality rate among infants, under-five children and pregnant women. The disease can reduce the productivity of the country's human resources.

Meanwhile, in terms of clinical malaria cases, Mamuju district was also recorded in 1009 to have the highest number, namely 16,810, followed by Polewali Mandar 2,025, Majene 1,517, Mamasa 928, and North Mamuju 370.(T.KR-LWA/HAJM)
