Makassar (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of students staged a peaceful rally here on Monday to demand the settlement of the Bank Century bailout case.

"We come here to voice the people's aspirations and demand the prompt settlement of the Bank Century scandal to prevent it from dragging on," the rally's coordinator, Wahida, said.

Wahida from the Federation of the Indonesian Poor (SRMI) said the police's recent attack on the secretariat of the Islamic Students Association (HMI)'s branch in Makassar was triggered by widespread rallies over the Bank Century case.

He asked people from all walks of life, including students to unite in safeguarding the settlement of the case.

The House of Representatives (DPR) in its plenary last Wednesday decided there were alleged violations in the extension of a bailout amounting to Rp6.7 trillion for ailing Bank Century in late 2008.

But President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last Thursday said a policy issued with a good intention could not be taken to court or prosecuted.

Acting Chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Tumpak Hatorangan Pangabean said last week the commission was still continuing its examinations over alleged corruption crimes in the Bank Century case.(S012/a014)
