Four Drug Traffickers Arrested in S Sulawesi

Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian police wage their war on drug trafficking without letup.

On Friday, anti-drug policemen in South Sulawesi's provincial capital of Makassar arrested four drug traffickers.

Chief of the Makassar police's drug investigation unit Hasbi Hasan said the four detainees had been named suspects.

They were only identified as Bimo, Cha, Sam alias Paps, and Yu alias Yul, he said, adding that they were all local residents.

Bimo and Cha were picked up in raid on their house where they had been keeping five packs of methamphetamine, 10 methamphetamine pills, and tens of plastic pouches for methamphetamine, he said.

The arrest of Bimo and Cha had paved the way for Sam and Yu's detention, Hasan said.

The suspects would face at least four years in jail if the court found them guilty, he added.

Indonesia is one of a number of Asian countries where the operations of drug smuggling syndicates have become a serious threat.

The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) reported there were 3.6 million drug users in Indonesia in 2008.

The drug users came from various social and professional backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, politicians, and policemen.

A police officer in Barito Utara district, Central Kalimantan province, was recently fired after a local court found him guilty of consuming methamphetamines. (T.R013/S012)
