Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The development of tourism in Makassar city should have a positive effect on the economy of small communities near the tourism objects.

Head of the Makassar Tourism Development and Promotion Office (BP3) Nico B Pasaka said here on Monday that the Makassar administration needs to pay a serious attention to tourism development so that it did not lead to economic imbalance, especially to the small communities living near the tourism objects.

"Tourism should have a direct positive effect on the economy of the people who live near tourism objects," Nico said, pointing out that pedicab drivers in the vicinity of Makassar's Sukarno-Hatta port should take the advantage from tourism development.

He said around 150 pedicab drivers at the port could drive foreign tourists to tourism objects in the city each time a foreign cruise ship with hundreds of tourists arrived there.

In his estimation, each pedicab driver could gain a profit of US200 per day if he actively drive foreign tourists to their desired destinations in the city.

"Besides, there are many other community economic enterprises that can be developed near tourism objects to increase the local people's income," he said.

In addition, Nico said there were also interesting souvenirs and knick knacks sought by both domestic and foreign tourists.

That he said would provide added value for tourism development in the city of Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Nico expressed optimism that if all those things were managed well and properly, the tourism development program in the city would be more acceptable with direct involvement of the local people.(T.SYS/F001)
