Mamuju (ANTARA Sulbar) - Cacao plantations in West Sulawesi has been reduced over the past several years as many farmers have converted their cacao plantations into oil palm plantations.

Mansyur, an official of the provincial plantation office, said in 2014, cacao plantations in the province totaled 168,000 hectares reduced from 209,000 hectares in 2009.

However, cacao plantations beside oil palm plantations, remain one of the economic backbones of the province, Mansyur said.

He said pest and plant diseases attacking cacao crops had forced many farmers to opt to grow oil palm trees which are more resistant to plant disease.

West Sulawesi is one of the largest cacao producers in Indonesia, which is the world`s third largest producer of that commodity .
