Makassar (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wants to see Indonesia achieve self-sufficiency in sugar as soon as possible, a minister said.
"The President has directed there should be no further delays in reaching the sugar self-sufficiency target." State Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said here on Friday.
The minister said plantations would be the most potential for development to support the goal meanwhile sugar had become the main commodity whose development is being spurred.
"Soybeans and meat are still far behind. The question now is management to maintain self-sufficiency. Ninety percent of national demand must be met from home," he said adding that rice imports had so far not become a problem.
He said South Sulawesi had played a role as a national food supplier and a reliable source of food for the country's eastern region. "There are two distribution points namely East Java for Indonesia's western region and South Sulawesi for Indonesia's eastern region. There have been regional divisions," he said.
Regarding exports the minister said the potential was there but priority was still put on meeting national demand.(T.SYS/A014)
