Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA Sulsel) - State-owned telecommunication company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) hopes to see 200,000 of its subscribers in eastern Indonesia to migrate to fiber optic from copper cable networks in 2016.
"In 2015, our subscribers in Eastern Indonesia already migrated but not all. Only around 45 percent. We hope 200,000 more subscribers would follow in 2016," head of the Eastern Indonesia branch of Telkom Mohammad Firdaus said here on Saturday.
Firdaus said Telkom has around 500,000 subscribers in eastern Indonesia, and all of them are expected to migrate.
Telkom is seeking to promote its product of Indihome triple play offering telephone, internet and usee TV services .
Currently the product has been used by 1 million subscribers all over Indonesia including 100,000 in eastern regions of the country.
"Around 94 percent of 144 regencies and municipal cities in eastern Indonesia, have migrated in cable network to fiber optics. Twenty more districts are expected to follow in 2016 mainly in Papua and Maluku like Tidore and Halmahera," Firdaus said.
He said Telkom has accelerated work to build under water infrastructure for fiber optic cable networks including in isolated areas.
In eastern Indonesia Telkom already completed construction of submarine optic cable infrastructure for Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) commissioned by President Joko Widodo in Manokwari, Papua Barat in May, 2015.
SMPCS is a submarine digital tollway that could carry data with a high speed of up to 100 Mbps, facilitating public communications for households, and commercial and government sectors in 10 provinces covered by the eastern branch of Telkom .
"Currently, interest service is needed not only in urban areas but also in rural areas potential to be developed into economic growth centers," Firdaus said.
He cited that business players in the village of Rurukan in North Sulawesi especially in the sector of creative economy have utilized and relied much on internet service.
The local people use internet service to promote their farm, plantation and handicraft commodities in international markets, he said.
At the same time they could easily gain access to market information , he added.
"Internet service is also needed and has been available in a number of tourist destinations in northern Sulawesi . The service helps promote tourist destinations not yet widely known," he said
In addition to expanding infrastructure, Telkom is launching modernization program by replacing old facilities and production equipment and networks to fiber optic from copper cables, he said.
